The Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for strong winds and very rough seas as Cyclonic Storm Arnab intensifies over the Bay of Bengal.
Forecasters said the system will not make direct landfall on Sri Lanka, but its indirect effects are expected to bring heavy rain across several provinces over three days. The storm is tracking towards the Indian coast.
Winds could reach 80 to 100 km/h, with waves of three to four metres, in the sea area between 10°N and 20°N latitude and 80°E and 95°E longitude. Fishing and naval communities have been urged not to venture into these waters, and those already at sea have been told to return to safety.
Heavy rainfall is forecast in the Northern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western, Central and Southern provinces and in the Anuradhapura District. The National Building Research Organisation and the Irrigation Department have issued early warnings for landslides and minor flooding in vulnerable areas.
